This is a picture of reclaimed Wormy Chestnut. Wormy chestnut is rare with all but a few trees in existence today. The blight that destroyed these trees also attacked other woods, such as oak, black walnut and pine, when the supply of chestnut fell to short supply. The holes you see in this image are the actual holes that the beetle's caused feeding off the wood. We take great care in saving these defects in the wood. This truly adds character and beauty to a historic piece of custom furniture. Many wood crafters use planners, all but removing the worm holes. This causes the piece to lose all that rich character. During our finishing process the holes are carefully filled with a poly finish to preserve their beauty to YOUR piece of furniture. They remain completely noticeable but are protected against life's circumstances. ( Spills, weather)
You can also notice the original saw markings on this piece. Since we do not use a planner on the wood, all the character remains. This gives you, the historian, a remarkable bit of our rich heritage for generations to come.

HAND CARVINGS FOUND IN RECLAIMED WOOD OF 1800's Farm Home. This wood was used to build an amzing bed that can be seen on our new arrivals page.

These carrved numbers have been saved and used in the build of this bed. ( All together 5 numbers were salvaged and used in this build.)

SOLID CUSTOM  RUSTIC BED. ( Image taken during the build.)

The LOVE that went into the building of the original home has been saved for generations to come in this one of a kind rustic bed.

This is an image of square pegging. This was a common practice on 1800's farm tables. The pegs were used to strengthen and attach the bread boards to the end of a table. We love to use a different wood when pegging to make the timelessness of this art form prominent for all to see.

Another common practice on rustic farm tables was the butterfly joint. This was used to join two pieces of wood or to repair an existing crack in the wood. We hand carve a butterfly then chisel out the opening on the two sides of the crack . We then clamp the sides inserting the butterfly, adding strength and character to the piece. Again , we use a different wood to make this artistic detail stand out for all to enjoy.
We are proud of the fact we use reclaimed wood and work towards preserving the heritage of our country and it's past. Those who came before us deserve to have their lives live on. Our " Children of the Barn" series of furniture does just that. The developers of our country built these homes and barns with through years of blood and sweat and now those same homes and barns live on through the furniture we create from them. Hence-
"The Children of the Barn".

When dealing with 10 x 12 hand hewn beams the use of a chain saw is the quickest and safest way to obtain a clean mortise and tenon joint. By making a few slices in the wood it makes the job of chiseling the joint a whole lot easier.

This rare 4" thick pice of wormy chestnut was found lining the porch of an 1810 farm house.

MANY hours of hand planing were used on these boards to save as much of the history and beauty as could be saved. This picture is of the beautiful wood we found
underneath the history.
